Frequent Asked Questions (FAQ's) Pre-College Students

1. How many students are there per class?

In each class, there is approximately 10 to 20 students per class.

2.What kinds of students attend the school?

Our students come from all over the world, including China, Vietnam, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Nepal, The Philippines, Spain, Thai, Russia, the U.S and many others.

3.Do you offer any financial aid or scholarships or opportunities?

4.Does Tokyo International Exchange School provide housing?

Yes. Male and female residents are accommodated in different locations outside of campus.  In addition, we offer on-campus housing to students who are enrolled in short-term courses at Tokyo International Exchange School.

5.What kind of cultural activities do you arrange?

We facilitate cultural events every month, such as beach trips, climbing Mt. Fuji, ski & snowboarding trips, sports festivals, maple leaf viewing, visiting elementary schools, etc.  Every month, students have several opportunities to learn about Japanese language and culture through these activities!

6.I cannot speak Japanese very well.  Can I get English or Chinese assistance?

There are English and Chinese language assistants available on campus.  Please feel free to ask any questions.

7.I would like to go to a Japanese university.  Do you have a prep course for the Examination for Japanese University Admission for international students (EJU)?

College prep courses provided for the following subjects: Economics, Japanese Culture, Japanese History, History of the World, and Math.


8.I have problems with learning Kanji.  Do you offer Kanji classes?

We offer Basic and Intermediate Kanji classes for those who face this problem.


9. Can I have a part-time job with a pre-college student visa?

After you receive the Certificate of Work permit by the Immigration Bureau of Japan, you are permitted to have a part-time job with certain limitations established by the Immigration-Control and Refugee-Recognition Act.


10.I would like to go to a Japanese University. Do you have a prep course for Examination for Japanese University Admission for international students
(EJU)?

College prep courses provide the following subjects including Economics,
Japan and the World, Japanese History, History of the World, and Math.

12.Regarding financial documents, can I represent myself as the financial guarantor?

The applicant can be fully or partially self-sponsored in some cases.  For more information, please contact us.


13.Does Tokyo International Exchange School have a computer lab?

Yes, the Computer lab is located on the 3rd floor, and wireless internet access is available at any classroom on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors.


14. Does Tokyo International Exchange School have a library?

Yes, the Library is located on the 5th floor, and contains areas of study consisting of the following individual collections: Linguistics, Japanese Studies, Japanese Literature, English, etc.  The library is also used as a study room.

Non degree seeking students or non student VISA holder

1.Can I observe the class or do a free trial before enrolling?

Of course, In order to understand the program better, we recommend you observe a class before enrolling.


2. When can I sign-up for class?

You can sign-up anytime.


3.What documents do I need for entry?

Documents needed for entry into the audit course are:

  1. 1.Application Form (available on campus)
  2. 2.Passport
  3. 3. Alien registration card (for holders only)
  4. 4.One ID photo (3 cm × 4 cm)

4.I would like to join in a group lesson, but I am often away from Japan on business or family trips.  Is that ok?

  • Yes, we can make the schedule work for you.  For the valid period of your contract, we can extend it for the period that you are away.  After you return from your trip, you can change to another group that better suits your schedule and learning goals.
  • If you inform us via a written notification of 1 day absence in advance, the school will extend your lesson contract for 1-day per month only.
  • Note: If you do not provide a written notification, no extension will be made for your absence.

5.Can I get partial tuition refund if I decide to quit the school?

It is a one-time payment for each term.  There is no refund for leaving before the end of term.


6.Who will be my teacher?

All Tokyo International Exchange School teachers are native speakers of Japanese who are fully-qualified in teaching Japanese as a second language.


7.Does Tokyo International Exchange School offer housing for audit students?

In order to get a housing assignment in Tokyo International Exchange School housing, all eligible students must pay tuition and housing for 6 months.  No refund will be made after the payment is processed.


8.Is there any lower or upper age limit to apply for the course?

There is no specific age limit to apply for the course.  However, Tokyo International Exchange School assumes that all students are able act with a proper level of maturity and responsibility.


9. Can I go to school by bicycle?

  • Only people who live farther than a specified distance from the school may register for the school parking lots. You will be required to bring an Alien Registration card or insurance for the registration.
  •   We do not have a parking lot with ample parking space, so you are kindly requested not to come to the school by bicycle if your residence is within 20 minutes walking distance,
  • By Hachioji ordinance, bicycles left on the streets will be removed.If your bicycle has been removed, you must pay a ¥3,000 removal fee to Hachioji city. Tokyo International School will be not be responsible for this matter.

10.Can I go to school by motor-cycle?

The school parking lot is for teachers’ and students’ bicycles only.  Parking your motor-cycle close to the school is strictly prohibited.


11.Does Tokyo International Exchange School have a car parking lot?

There is no car parking space available at the school.  However, one hour fee parking lots are located near the school.


12.Do you have a prep course for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT)?

The class curriculum is divided into four areas: reading, listening, kanji and grammar.  We also include timed practice testing, utilizing actual JLPT tests.


Living in Japan

1. How long does it to take to get to the center of Tokyo?

It takes about 40 minutes by JR Chuo line train, with no transfer required.


2.What's the cost of living like in Japan?   How much allowance will I need?

The cost of living is greatly affected by the type of accommodations you require.  It ranges from \30,000 to \60,000 per month and additional expenses such as charges for electricity, gas, water, telephone, and meals range from \60,000 or more.
